Comune di Africo
Africo Nuovo was founded after the merging of two formerly distinct territorial entities: the town of Africo and the hamlet of Casalinuovo. Some people think its name comes from the Greek word “Apricus” (meaning airy and sun-washed), used to convey the benefits deriving from its geographical location; others maintain it comes from “Aprokos”, namely “the foam”, a word used as a metaphor to designate the best part of the surviving inhabitants of Tirsia, a city which in ancient times was probably located on the territory of Africo.
The quaint and unpolluted shores of Africo also feature a very famous and much admired reef. The town belongs to the Diocese of Locri-Gerace, and its favourable environmental conditions are optimal for the development of tourism on its territory.
